James Hill retired in 2011 as Director of the Rainwater Observatory & Planetarium in French Camp, Mississippi. From 2012-2023 he taught Planetary Astronomy at the University of Mississippi. He has been "doing" astronomy since he built his first telescope in 1953. Jim is married, has 4 grown children, and is working on grandchildren. He plays violin and viola and builds harpsichords and restores pipe organs for a hobby. Jim taught at the 2001 Mississippi Governor's School. He is the recipient of the 2001 Thomas Brennan Award for Astronomy Education from the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. He was selected a Mississippi STAR teacher five times. He is a Master Volunteer Astronomer for the National Park Service. He has been a Solar System Ambassador since 1999.
