Contact Michael
After spending nearly a decade at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln as a Lecturer of Astronomy and Physics, Michael Sibbernsen decided to devote his time and energy to Branched Oak Observatory, an educational non-profit co-founded many years ago. Michael now serves as the Director of Education for the facility. Not wanting to leave the world of Higher Education behind completely, Michael works as a Continuing Education Instructor for Metropolitan Community College in Omaha and Southeast Community College in Lincoln, Nebraska. Before working at the university and the Branched Oak Observatory, Michael was the Science and Technology Coordinator at the Strategic Air & Space Museum, and before that, the Outreach Coordinator for the NASA Nebraska Space Grant. Michael has appeared on national television many times and was a regular fixture as “the science guy” on a local morning talk show in Omaha. Between the years of 2011-2014, Michael was selected by the Nebraska Department of Education and the 21st Century Community Learning Centers to be a lead instructor for Nebraska BLAST!, a program funded by NASA in order to train teachers about robotics, rocketry, aviation, and space science. In his free time, Michael runs the NASA Nebraska High Altitude Ballooning (N-NHAB) Program along with his wife Kendra, launching scientific payloads into near-space. The program is currently preparing to launch a number of special payloads for NASA during the 2024 Total Solar Eclipse.
