Jim Zappa
Jim Zappa is a practicing engineer with over 30+ years of experience in the Aerospace industry. In his current position, he is involved with the design, manufacture, and testing of rocket engines, bi-propellant satellite thrusters, and spacecraft propulsion systems. His previous experience includes 14 years in the Aviation industry designing high pressure oxygen equipment for commercial, military, and general aviation aircraft. He is the holder of two US patents, and has also held a position as an FAA Designated Engineering Representative.
Jim's education consists of a B.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering and a B.S degree in Mechanical Engineering, both from the State University of NY at Buffalo. Additionally, he holds an MBA Certificate, also from the University of Buffalo. In addition to academic degrees, Jim is a member of several Aerospace organizations including the Aero Club of Buffalo, the Challenger Space Center, the Young Astronauts Council, and the Astronomical League. Jim is an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), and a member of the AIAA STEM & Education Outreach Committee for the Niagara Frontier Chapter.
Jim is an award winning amateur astronomer, and enjoys using his many telescopes to share the night sky with family, friends, and neighbors. Jim was also the first astronomer in the WNY area to sponsor a Library Telescope Program, which is a natural extension of Jim’s STEM outreach and education involvement in the local community.
Jim is an experienced guest lecturer, and has presented on a variety of topics related to space, astronomy, and aviation.
