Carmen Masó, retired from the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) in 2022 after 30+ years of service.  Her career was in Geographic Information Systems, and she worked on a variety of GIS projects. She was U.S. staff lead for the US/Mexico Border XXI Program’s Environmental Information Resources Workgroup from 1992-1999.  She was the coordinator for the Region 5 Chicago Office’s implementation of NEPAssist application, an interactive mapping that is used in the analysis of environmental impact statements and environmental assessments which received the 2008 ESRI Special Achievement in GIS and in 2009, an Agency Gold Medal.  

Carmen has MA in Geography from the University of Oklahoma-Norman.  She is an active member of the EPA Toastmasters club, where in 2009 she has received her Distinguished Toastmaster designation.  She is a member of several geography organizations and presently the Central Office Director for the Illinois Geographical Society. She has also been a volunteer at the Adler Planetarium since 2003 where she has had the opportunity to share her love for space science with the public.
