Shannon Murphy decided she wanted to be an astronomer at 14, when she discovered studying the stars was actually a real job you could get paid to do. However, in graduate school she found teaching was far more interesting and rewarding than theoretical astrophysics. After nearly a decade as an adjunct professor at various colleges, she took a job maintaining the student observatory and planetarium at the University of Michigan. She now teaches just often enough to remember how much she hates grading. Developing astronomy lab materials and managing the department outreach program provides ample opportunity to find new way to teach astronomy, and inspire others to be curious about the universe. Also, she gets paid to write planetarium shows and hang out in the observatory!
