Solar System Ambassadors
Douglas Woods
When Douglas Woods retired, he had a plan. He was going to take pictures, catch fish, and read books. The first of these activities, particularly photographing launches from NASA's Kennedy Space Center, drew him into astrophotography, and inevitably, amateur astronomy. In a sense this had brought him full circle, finally satisfying his youthful desire to study the night sky. The lengthy interruption in seriously pursuing his stargazing dreams began about the time he got married, and ended when he eventually could afford to retire. In between, he worked as an information technology professional, starting as a programmer and ending as a solutions architect, with the usual progression of technical evolution throughout. At the end of a thirty-plus year career in information technology, he was able to indulge another of his interests, and attended a course in baking and pastry arts. A short stint in one of the theme park bakeries in Orlando--the most fun he ever had earning a salary--ended in 2020. Now with a telescope, a camera, and time enough for the universe, he travels about Florida looking for skies that are not yet too light polluted. The remainder of his time is spent engaging in community outreach through his affiliation with the Central Florida Astronomical Society. Douglas enjoys sharing his enthusiasm and wonder for the night sky, and does his best to relate the hope he finds in the collective effort to explore and understand the cosmos.
