Contact Jeffrey

Jeffrey Martin grew up in Huntsville, Alabama near the Marshall Space Flight Center, where his father worked with the rocket team that designed and built the Saturn V Moon rocket. Earth tremors and thundering from periodic static test-firing of Saturn V boosters in the early 1960s ignited his interests in space exploration and astronomy. He followed the developments in NASA’s space program throughout his youth. For example, Jeffrey and three other 14-year-old's planned, built and “flew” a mock-up of the Apollo 11 spacecraft on a ten-day simulated Apollo 11 mission in a sandlot in Central Florida at the exact same time that the real Apollo 11 Moon mission took place in the summer heat of July 16-26,1969! His simulated “Moon mission” was publicized in the local newspaper, on a local TV station and was recognized in a letter of commendation from Thomas Paine who was then the NASA administrator. His “Rocket Boys” mock-up Moon mission was featured again in a book commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Apollo moon landing! In his adult life, he has participated in many outreach programs at local science museums, scouting events and star parties across the southeast. Now that he's retired from his career as a family physician, he is rekindling his interests in space exploration and astronomy outreach. He is currently a merit badge counselor in space exploration, astronomy and first aid merit badges for Scouts in the Central Florida Council. He has conducted astronomical observing sessions at local state parks and scout camps. He plans on conducting astronomy and NASA outreach in his programs.
