Michael Overacker
Michael Overacker is a retired professional firefighter, photographer, and businessman. He currently enjoys the hobbies of astronomy and guitar building (luthiery). He has been involved in astronomy and space science his entire life. He has built 6 telescopes and modified many more. He was President of the Roanoke Valley Astronomical Society from 2006-2008, and formed the Star City Astronomy Network in 2008. In 2007, Michael oversaw the installation of the telescopes and equipment at the Belk Observatory in Bedford, Virginia, and then helped set up the outreach program at the observatory that is still in use today. Michael was lead docent at the observatory for several years. Michael runs a program that utilizes an outreach van to take astronomy and space science programs to the schools, colleges, and general public. The vehicle carries a large assortment of telescopes (80mm to 20 inches) to wherever there is a program to present, or just to set up for spontaneous events. All of the telescopes are equipped for both nighttime and solar viewing. Michael also runs multiple websites that promote astronomy and support of various telescope brands. Michael has given hundreds of presentations on a variety of space and astronomy subjects for several decades, to thousands of attendees, including scouting troops, nature clubs, educational programs, schools, colleges and universities, resorts, private events, and many to the general public. Michael currently holds 23 Astronomical League Observing and Outreach Awards, and is a Master of Outreach and a Master Observer.
