Born in Palo Alto, California, The Rev. Dr. Greg Snyder has lived many different places in the U.S. and in Spain, while being raised in a Navy family. He is an Eagle Scout, a graduate of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in Geology (B Sc), and of the Colorado School of Mines (M Sc and Ph D) in geochemistry. Prior to being called into the priesthood, Dr. Snyder was a Research Professor at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville in the area of planetary geology and geochemistry from 1990 to 1999, studying Moon rocks and meteorites, and ancient igneous rocks. He has analyzed rocks from every lunar landing site, including the three Russian Luna sites. He has published over 60 articles in refereed journals, several other articles in books and book reviews, and authored or co-authored over 130 abstracts for presentations at national and international meetings. Dr. Snyder (called Fr. Greg by his parishioners) is a 2002 graduate of Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry & Seminary, where he graduated with honors. He was ordained a deacon and then priest and served as Curate and Associate Rector at St. John’s Parish Church, Johns Island, SC from 2002 to 2005. In 2005, upon the retirement of the Rector, Fr. Greg was called as the 40th Rector of St. John’s Parish Church (Anglican), Johns Island. He has served the Diocese of South Carolina as a member of Diocesan Council and Congregational Development; The Standing Committee, and as its President in 2013. He currently Chairs the Board of Examining Chaplains for the diocese and is an instructor of Old Testament and Theology in the Deacon’s School. Fr. Greg has served on the Board of Trustees of Trinity School for Ministry & Seminary since 2007. He is also a member of the Society of Ordained Scientists. He is the 2017 recipient of the John Stott Award for Pastoral Engagement in Theology and Science. Dr. Snyder enjoys reading -- particularly space exploration history, theology, historical fiction and mysteries -- travel, and hiking, and especially any combination of all three.
