Solar System Ambassadors
Beverly Berekian
Beverly Berekian is currently an 8th grade Integrated Science teacher at a public school in Lake Forest California. She is also a part time College Instructor at a few of the local Community Colleges. One of the amazing opportunities she had as a brand new teacher was to co-teach the NASA Pre-Service teacher Institute held in Palmdale California at the AERO Institute. That is where her love for space and NASA began. Prior to becoming a teacher she had various careers. After having spent time in the United States Air Force, she decided she wanted to give college a try and fell in love with geology. She spent a bit of time as a field geologist, but took a job at the university where she was working on her Masters Degree. she quickly found herself teaching at her first Community College and found that she loved facilitating learning for her students and sharing in their "ah-ha" moments. Her first job in Secondary Education was as a 9th grade Earth Science teacher. Most recently, Bev has become a NASA/SOFIA Airborne Astronomy Ambassador, a Space Foundation International Teacher Liaison, and is currently waiting to fly student experiments on a Zero-gravity flight in November, 2023. As a beginning teacher, she focused a great deal of learning on Space Science and quickly learned that this was a way to connect to her students, as we all shared that love and wonder of space. She went on to start the first Science Fair at her high school, becoming part of the California NGSS Trainer-of-Trainer team facilitating the rollout of the new NGSS standards that by design bring Earth and Space Science to the forefront of education. Through her initial introduction to the AERO Institute in Palmdale, California, she became a NASA AREES Ambassador, NASA Pre-Service Teacher Institute Instructor, and in 2019 she was honored by being recognized as a Space Center Houston SEEC Crew Member.
