Solar System Ambassadors
Anastasia Vail
Anastasia is an amateur astronomer, astrophotographer, and space exploration enthusiast. Through her positions of Co-chair, Social Media Director, and Educator with the Raleigh Astronomy Club as well as her own astronomy/space exploration curricula, she works to bring the wonder of space to North Carolinians. Her interest in space began at a very young age, when she would watch Space Shuttle launches on television with her family. She learned to navigate the sky with and without a telescope, and attended both Space Camp as well as the two-week-long Advanced Space Academy at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville, Alabama. As her interests grew, she discovered another passion: elementary education. She has taught a wide range of subjects in various settings -- but after teaching NASA’s "Academy of Future Space Explorers" curriculum, she fell in love with teaching astronomy and space exploration history. Combining her passions of elementary education and astronomy just seemed to click. Since that epiphany, she has taught everything from elementary solar system science, to planetary chemistry, to advanced model rocketry. Primarily focusing on elementary-aged students, she develops her own multi-modal educational programs and materials across several platforms. With a nod to her astronomy education heroes -- Carl Sagan, Bill Nye, and others -- Anastasia strives to introduce the youth of humanity to their place in our cosmos and inspire them to keep looking up.
