Solar System Ambassadors
Carol Abbott
Carol Abbot grew up as the youngest of four children, in an era when playing outside all day in the neighborhood was the thing to do. She found that a wide variety of things interested her, from her father’s ability to fix almost anything around the house and garage, to her mother's knitting, to the crawdads in the creek, to her brother’s interest in space and model rockets. As a young adult, she even ground her own 6” telescope mirror, which she used in 2017 to view the total solar eclipse on a trip to Tennessee. She was intent in focusing on her school work, which continued through the pursuit of two Engineering degrees. After working for several years as an engineer at a local research and development company, Carol returned to the academic world as a professor of Automation and Control Technology. During this time, she was also feeding a desire to work with her hands by building her own house, and raising vegetables in a large garden. Carol was granted a sabbatical from teaching in 1999, to begin work towards a PhD, which she finally completed in 2011. After many years of hobbies and volunteer and part time work with several local institutions, Carol realized that she does not consider herself to be a specialist in any one discipline. She enjoys being a generalist, and will tackle any new task that comes before her. When faced with several fallen trees after a big storm, she decided to learn wood-working, to make use of this “windfall”. She is currently teaching as an adjunct instructor of Algebra at Ohio University Lancaster Campus, and enjoys the outdoors and riding her bicycle.
