Debbie Montenegro
Debbie Montenegro is the Deputy Director for the Network of the National Library of Medicine Region 3, an outreach, training, and grants office for the National Library of Medicine, an institute of the National Institutes of Health. NNLM R3 is located at UNT Health Science Center. Debbie directs health information outreach programs throughout a 7-state region; Arkansas, Kansas, Louisiana, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma, and Texas. She is a director, science educator, professional development trainer, grants administrator and reviewer, outreach coordinator, content creator, and science communicator all-in-one. She offers classes, conference presentations, and webinars on both grant writing and astronaut health resources amongst other projects. Education/Background: Debbie Montenegro holds a Master of Science in Information Science with a Health Informatics Specialization from University of North Texas and a bachelor's degree in Chemistry from Southern Methodist University. While at SMU, Debbie completed an internship where she worked in the lab with a research team of chemists and biologists. Debbie completed a teacher certification program and taught Chemistry and Environmental Science at the senior high school level. While obtaining her master's degree, she worked at a local public library. After obtaining her graduate degree, she worked as the Learning Resource Center Manager at a nursing school where she assisted nursing students and faculty. Debbie moved on to the position of Cardiovascular Epidemiology Research Analyst and worked on projects for the National Institute of Health, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute R01 and industry-funded studies. She has been published in medical journals and co-author work presented at medical conferences. In January 2017, Debbie joined UNT HSC and the NNLM as the Consumer Health Outreach Coordinator for 3 years prior to becoming the Deputy Director.
