Fred Mitchell is really just the guy that gets folks around him interested in science. He has been teaching high school chemistry for 22 years and is a life-long space enthusiast. He has been selected Teacher of the Year two times and won the 2017 McGlothlin Award for Teaching Excellence. He used that award to travel to Antarctica in the winter of 2017. His interest in space was started by his father, and Fred passes it along to his community by leading space-based intersession activities for students from elementary to high school. Coming from Galax, a very rural area in the mountains of Virginia, Fred uses social media to help his students, and their community, understand that they can be a part of bigger things in the world. To help with this mission, he has attended two NASA Social events surrounding a couple of launches from Kennedy Space Center and Cape Canaveral. These events became the first parts of a series of short science videos he produced for social media. Many people from the community follow along to learn a little science each week. When he isn’t talking about chemistry, space, or science, Fred spends time training and racing bicycles. He rides over 10,000 miles a year to be ready to race around the Southeastern United States. He recovers at home with his wife and twin 11-year-old children.
