Solar System Ambassadors
David Ludwikoski
Growing up in Toledo, Ohio during the exciting days of the Apollo program and watching the moon landings live on TV (especially Ohio native Neil Armstrong) really captured David Ludwikoski's awe and imagination for space and anything astronomy related. Also, having an uncle who read every book Isaac Asimov wrote and who taught him how to be an amateur astronomer continued fanning the flames of his love for space exploration from his childhood up through my college years. Even though he earned degrees in geology (including courses in astronomy), his love of astronomy never dimmed. After getting laid off from a position as an environmental consultant in the late 90s, he briefly worked as a naturalist for both the Toledo Metroparks and Olander Park System of Sylvania, OH, coordinating star parties. During that time, he applied for an adjunct science teaching position at Owens Community College. Interestingly enough, they needed someone to teach astronomy! This gave him the opportunity to share his passion with others and to gain additional experience using a telescope (both the college’s and my own personal one). This led to an additional adjunct position at Lourdes College, where he also taught astronomy and a few courses for their Eldervision program. In 2003, he was able to successfully land a full-time position at the Community College of Baltimore County, (CCBC) in Baltimore Maryland, teaching astronomy, earth science, and geology while directing the college observatory at the Dundalk campus. In 2005, he moved to the Catonsville campus, becoming actively engaged in doing planetarium shows at the college’s Benjamin Banneker planetarium while still conducting star parties at Dundalk. He became the planetarium director in 2014. In 2015, the planetarium was moved to a new building and debuted a new digital projector, where he and a retired colleague create and conduct shows for the public and for visiting school groups on a regular basis.
