Solar System Ambassadors
Doug Lively
Doug Lively's interest in space and space related activities began at a very early age with the space program's testing of Thor rocket engines near my 1960's home located in Cocoa, Florida. Even though he lived about 26 mile away from the Cape, he distinctly remembers feeling the house shake whenever those mighty engines were tested. He remembers thinking, "Anything that could shake a house like that had to be cool!" . His interests quickly moved to astronomy, and he loved sharing his observations with neighbors and friends whenever he could. He lead his first solar observing session with his 4th grade class. Like a lot of kids, he avidly followed the space program. However, seeing launches form the school playground and following them with his telescope really helped reinforce his love for all things connected with space. However, college, raising a family and the effort to support loved ones distracted his from astronomy until his late 40's when he met a manager and friend who encouraged him to join the local astronomy club. After that, his interest in astronomy was rekindled, and he worked towards engaging the public, sharing my scope and knowledge during public sessions, and refining his astronomical skills ever since through Astronomical League observing programs.
