Solar System Ambassadors
Phyllis Scalettar
Dr. Phyllis Scalettar, a proud Army “brat”, grew up living the nomadic, exciting and highly educational military life. Her introduction to travel as a child led to a life-long passion to discover and learn from what lies beyond the bend in the road…she has been to every continent except Australia (she will get there!). Her wanderlust has extended to her career in both the public and private sectors, where Phyllis has been a senior executive in the federal government in seven federal agencies whose representative missions encompass environmental protection, public safety/emergency management, accident investigation and law enforcement. As examples, her responsibilities have included management of scientific programs to reclaim coal mining-impacted lands and water and to protect the public during destruction of chemical warfare agents stored in military munitions, and her independent creation of a federal chemical safety agency. She currently is treasurer of a financial services firm that identifies and recovers over-payments for clients and designs cost-reduction solutions for their businesses. Phyllis especially enjoys introducing people to new experiences and challenging them to expand their horizons. This includes educating them about the government’s often unrecognized and under-appreciated resources, work and results that positively impact their daily lives. NASA, her focus as a Solar System Ambassador, is a major source of those taxpayer-financed benefits. By helping audiences of all ages better understand what NASA does and how it helps those who are Earth-bound, her hope is that they will be encouraged to learn even more on their own. And, perhaps most importantly, she wants to expand young people’s horizons and stimulate excitement about STEM-based career possibilities that might enable them to do as NASA does, namely contribute to a better life for all humanity.
