Solar System Ambassadors
Paul Winkeler
Paul Winkeler is the son of an aerospace engineer who worked for the US Army, so he grew up around helicopters, airplanes, and anything that flies. From a young age he was fascinated with flight and felt aviation was his calling. During his formative years, he was inspired by the sciences in his academic courses and eagerly pursued all sciences in school. Once he reached college, he determined chemistry would be his central science. During this time, he recognized that he truly desired to share my joy in science with others and entered the field of education. It was a fortunate event for Paul when his father was transferred to Huntsville, Alabama to continue his work for the Army at Redstone Arsenal at Marshall Space Flight Center. He had always been fascinated by space exploration and astronomy so he used every opportunity to visit and explore those facilities. He was able to utilize NASA Educational Resources for Educators in my classes, which showed his students how the work that NASA does impacts all sciences. As a chemistry instructor, Paul always searched for opportunities to work space-related content into the curriculum. In 2009, he was named Chair of Science at Rockhurst High School, which allowed him to infuse space and astronomy concepts in the curricula of all the disciplines. Aside from teaching, he has developed numerous academic clubs which have been built around NASA principles. These clubs are extensions of the classroom, giving students the freedom to pursue those sciences they are passionate about. Starting in 2015 , Paul began teaching a newly developed Earth Science course. To be an ambassador for the cosmos and bring its wonder to his academic institution has been a tremendous honor for Paul and one that he will continue to grow in the upcoming years.
