Solar System Ambassadors
Katherine Auld
Dr. Katherine Auld has taught various science classes at Northwest Arkansas Community College first as an adjunct, then as an assistant professor, and now physical science department chair for the last twleve years. Her appreciation of the night sky began as a young child watch the Perseid meteor show with her parents. Katherine’s fascination with space began November 1981 when her fourth-grade class watched Columbia's launch plume billow out as it lifted off the pad. Katherine holds a B.S. and M.S. in Geology. Her doctoral dissertation in Space and Planetary Science with an emphasis in planetary geomorphology studied the formation processes of gullies on the Martian surface. Katherine’s focus on science extends into most areas of her life. She is the board chair of a non-profit she founded to finance and build an informal science education center in Northwest Arkansas. In that position she organizes star parties and science outreach throughout the region. As a Solar System Ambassador, she has given presentations on astronomy, astronautics, physics, geology, environmental science, and careers in science to groups ranging from elementary to junior high classes, after school programs, home school associations, and libraries in the surrounding communities. Katherine is a SETI Airborne Astronomy Ambassador, a member of NASA Community College Network and a NASA Solar System Ambassador. All of these link back to her belief that science is all around us and intricately fused into all areas of our lives. We need only be introduced to those links to see them for ourselves. Katherine is involved in Boy Scouts teaching many science based merit badges and organizing science and technology activities for local units, districts, and councils.
