Composite Wild 2 Image Sequence
Quicktime 240x180 (6.1 MB)
Quicktime 480x360 (7.0 MB)
Quicktime 640x480 (66 MB)
This slideshow consists of several images taken by the navigation camera during the close approach phase of Stardust's Jan 2, 2004 flyby of comet Wild 2. Several large depressed regions can be seen. Comet Wild 2 is about five kilometers (3.1 miles) in diameter. To create these images, a short exposure image showing tremendous surface detail was overlain on a long exposure image showing jets. Together, the images show an intensely active surface, jetting dust and gas streams into space and leaving a trail millions of kilometers long.

Animation of Comet Particle Hits on Stardust
Quicktime 240x180 (2.1 MB)
Quicktime 480x360 (3.2 MB)
Quicktime 640x480 (71 MB)
This animation depicts the comet particle hits on Stardust during its turbulent ride through three of more than two dozen jets
that blast outward from comet Wild 2. The jets pummeled the spacecraft with about a
million particles per second. Twelve particles, some larger than a bullet, penetrated the top
layer of the spacecraft's protective shield.

Animation of Wild 2 Jets
Quicktime 240x180 (754K)
Quicktime 480x360 (1.1 MB)
Quicktime 640x480 (32 MB)
This animation depicts one of the many high-speed jets that shoot out from comet Wild 2.
The jets form when the Sun shines on icy areas near or just below the comet's
surface,
causing solid ice to become gas and blast outward at hundreds of kilometers per hour.
Scientists believe these jets may have played a part in shaping the comet's rugged surface.
