Community Quest

Welcome to Community Quest! As a leader in extended learning programs, you are in a unique position to make a positive difference in the lives of children you work with everyday. Community Quest is a resource that makes use of the excitement of NASA's Genesis mission, and is packaged in a way that is especially useful for extended learning programs. Each activity contains a Leader Guide and a Write-On Sheet for your participants.

The Leader Guide contains a description of the activity, background information for you, the K-5 standards addressed (science, language arts, and history), and step-by-step procedures for implementing the activity. The Write-On Sheet provides a place for your participants to respond to what happens in the activity, to record observations and data, and to answer questions. The chart below describes the Community Quest activities:

Title Materials Objective
Blast to the Past Leader Guide
Write-On Sheet
Learners construct a visual timeline of NASA firsts.
Clear Water Leader Guide
Write-On Sheet
Interactive
Learners test various samples of water for clarity.
Exit Nozzle Leader Guide
Write-On Sheet
Learners test how the size of an exit nozzle affects the force of the exhaust.
Inclined Pendulum Leader Guide
Write-On Sheet
Learners discover how gravity affects the speed of a planet's orbit.
Invisible Fun Leader Guide
Write-On Sheet
Learners discover that the solar wind material collected in Genesis is smaller than can be seen and will require special analytical instruments.
Plasma Wars Leader Guide
Write-On Sheet
Learners model the process of solar wind interacting with Earth's magnetosphere.
Proton Smasher Leader Guide
Write-On Sheet
Learners model the process of nuclear fusion in the core of the Sun.
Starry Universe Leader Guide
Write-On Sheet
Star Sheet
Learners discover that the universe looks homogeneous as seen from a distance.
Stories of Origins Audio Files
Leader Guide
Write-On Sheet
Communication Measurement Chart
Learners listen to stories about the creation of the Milky Way or the Pleiades star cluster. Learners then retell these stories to a peer audience.

Focus on Scouting

Are you a Boy Scout or a Girl Scout? The Genesis mission outreach team recognizes the importance of community organizations in the education of children outside of school. Children of outreach team members include an Eagle Scout, a Life Scout, a Tenderfoot, a Webelos Scout, a Cub Scout, and a Senior Girl Scout. Team members include an Assistant Scout Master and a Life Member of Girl Scouts. Genesis is producing materials for use in those programs. To show our respect for scouting programs and to recognize these programs as influential community youth organizations, the Genesis outreach Web site features materials that promote learning and achievement for youth.
