Proposal for a book on Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 impact

CUP has commissioned John Spencer (Lowell Observatory, Flagstaff) as the scientific editor, and Jacqueline Mitton (Press Officer, Royal Astronomical Society, London) as the managing editor. At the publisher's office the project is being co-ordinated by me (Simon Mitton).

The book will have about 30,000 words of text and up to 130 photographs (color and black and white), approximately 100 large format pages. The level will be accessible to the interested and informed general reader, and the language non-technical. This is not a scientific summary of the events, but rather a portfolio of images of the impacts with a scientifically informed and informative text.

Call for photographs and pictures

All photographs used in this book will be fully and conspicuously acknowledged.
All observatories, observing teams or individual observers who provide a photograph which is used in the book will receive one copy of the book free of charge and will be offered the privilege of buying further copies at a discount of 30% from the publishers list price.

Illustrations can be submitted as good quality glossy prints or on disk as EPS files (in the latter case include a paper copy of the image though). All submitted illustrations should include information for the editors to be able to write a full caption.
