Dr. George Flynn is a Professor at the Plattsburgh campus of the State
University of New York, where he teaches Physics and Mathematics. He
received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Physics from the Massachusetts
Institute of Technology in 1973, and received a PhD in Physics from
Washington University in 1982. He has performed chemical analysis of
meteorites and interplanetary dust since the mid-1970s. He employs
synchrotron-based x-ray techniques for the chemical, mineralogical and
organic analysis of micron-size and submicron-size particles. For the
past decade he has participated in the development of x-ray techniques
for the in-situ chemical and mineralogical analysis of particles
captured in aerogel, so the particles can be analyzed without first
having to remove them from the aerogel. Dr. Flynn is a member of the
Stardust Science Team, and he will lead a group of scientists from
four continents who will perform preliminary chemical composition
measurements on the samples of comet Wild 2 collected by Stardust.
