This Earth-orbiting spacecraft will investigate changes in the light reflected from Jupiter's atmosphere and the effects of the comet impact on Jupiter's atomic hydrogen bulge. The bulge is a region of enhanced atomic hydrogen emission from the planet's atmosphere near the equator. IUE also will examine comet-impact effects on Jupiter's aurorae and on the plasma "torus," or donut-like ring, that encircles the planet near the orbit of one of its moons, Io.
