APO Image of Fragment DEFGHRS Impacts

apo7.gif

This near-infrared image of Jupiter was taken in a 1.70 micron filter from the Apache Point Observatory 3.5-meter telescope at 03:37 UT July 20. North is up and East is to the right. The Great Red Spot (GRS), a long-lived storm system, is visible at roughly 22 degrees south latitude. The H impact site is south and slightly east of the GRS, while the D/G site rotates off the eastern limb as site E/F rotates on from the western terminator.
