Swedish 0.5m Solar Telescope Images

The H and G impact sites taken on July 18 at 21:37 UT.

The pictures so far available show the post impact dark spots in some detail. The following examples are from the evening of July 18. The images have been processed in such a way that the noise is reduced and a "false" yellow color hasbeen used instead of a standard greyscale.

The Uppsala group, consisting of Hans Rickman, Mats Lindgren, Per Magnusson and Johan Lagerros and also Göran Scharmer from Stockholm are observing the collision events. The telescope used is the solar telescope of the Swedish Royal Academy of Sciences, at La Palma (Canary islands).

The advantages of using this telescope are that it is equipped with a combination of hardware and software which enables us to obtain both very high time resolution 'films' of the effects on Jupiter's visible cloud tops, as well as high spatial resolution (<0.5 arcsec) of the entire disc.
