The ESO observing team has continued to observe Jupiter using the TIMMI infrared camera up to the end of their "run" on the night of the 30th/31st July 1994. The impact site complexes from the collisions of Comet P/Shoemaker-Levy 9 are still very clearly seen. Two images from this final night are given here. On the first the D,G,R,S collision area is visible on the western (bottom-right) limb of the planet. In the second image taken five hours later the same group has just reappeared on the opposite side of the planet.
The observers were Tim Livengood (NASA), Ulli Kaeufl (ESO), Benoit Mosser and Marc Sauvage (Observatoire de Paris-Meudon, France).
