NRL Simulated Image of a Comet Impact

nrl.gif

This image was simulated using a 3-D acoustic model that accounts for wind-induced refraction. It is a single vertical mode at 2mHz. Acoustic energy propagating from the impact site gets pinched by refraction into intense streaks. The pinching is most significant for energy that propagates nearly parallel to lines of latitude because the wind component of the wave speed is greatest. Since this behavior is geometric, it occurs at all frequencies. It therefore seems likely that features like this should show up in IR data. Has anyone seen anything like this yet?
