Impact of SL9 Fragment L on Jupiter

This dramatic image of the impact of fragment L of comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 on Jupiter was obtained on 19 July 1994 at 22:24 UT with the 10 micron Saclay CAMIRAS camera mounted on the 2.56m Nordic Optical Telescope (NOT) at Canarian island of La Palma (Spain). It has a 64 x 64 pixel field-of-view; each pixel measures 0.9 arcsec. A 10-13 micron band filter was used.

This image was obtained by a team of astronomers: Pierre-Olivier Lagage, Philippe Galdemard, Rene Jouan, Pierre Masse, Eric Pantin (Service d'Astrophysique of CEA at Saclay, F-91191 Gif-sur-Yvette Cedex, France), Juan Antonio Belmonte (Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias, Tenerife, Spain), Goeran Olofsson, Monica Hultgren (Stockholms Observatorium, Saltsjoebaden, Sweden).

The image was transferred electronically to ESO soon after it was obtained and photographically reproduced there. It may be reproduced if credit is given to the observers and the Nordic Optical Telescope.
