Impact of Fragment R from Lowell Observatory

A false-color image of Jupiter obtained at 5:44 UT July 21 using a 8900 A methane filter with the Perkins 1.8-m telescope coupled with the Imaging Fabry Perot instrument at Lowell Observatory. The bright feature seen on the lower-left limb of Jupiter was first detected at 5:42 UT, consistent with the detections by numerous IR observers of the fragment "R" fireball. The moon Europa is also visible to the right of the planet.
