ISON from the ISS

Comet ISON photographed by the crew aboard the International Space Station.

This was taken by the Expedition 38 crew on 23 Nov 2013 at 10:08:32 UTC by hand with an 85 mm lens, 1/10th (0.1) second exposure. Focus mode was manual. ISS was flying into orbital dawn at that time.

It was taken on the starboard side of ISS out of the Russian segment, looking along the +x axis of the Station. To the top and right is the U.S. Airlock; the vertical structure to the left in this view is the Rassvet (which literally means 'dawn' in Russian). Rassvet was brought up on the shuttle (STS-132) a few years ago.

To the right three planetary bodies form a triangle: brightest is Mercury, below is Saturn and off to the right is Comet ISON (~5 days before perihelion).
