The Sense of Place Series: Indigenous Perspectives on Earth and Sky is a speaker series featuring indigenous knowledge holders sharing their expertise on Earth and space sciences. In this 1 hour and 20 minute video Ka’iu Kimura speaks about the importance of place and of growing up in a Native Hawaiian family with close ties to places of familial connections on Hawai’i Island. She discusses the creation of the `Imiloa Astronomy Center on the University of Hawai’i campus in Hilo, and how it was built on a foundation of collaboration between culture, science and community amidst tensions over the further development of astronomy in Hawaiʻi. This talk was presented on June 18, 2020.
