What first sparked your interest in science, technology, engineering, and/or math?

Kim Holloway

I took a college-level biology course in high school, taught by a dedicated, passionate, and inspiring woman who made the science truly come alive for me. Her hilarious and animated way of describing and illustrating various biological systems and processes truly motivated me to keep learning about biology and science in general, so much so that I majored in biology in college.

What Science Activation project(s) are you affiliated with?

I am part of the Science Activation management team at NASA Headquarters, which we refer to as the "Backbone," so I support all the Science Activation project teams.

Tell us about your job. What do you do?

My role as part of the SciAct Backbone team is to help facilitate clear, concise communication and implementation of our coordinating efforts internally, as well as the outward-facing impactful work SciAct project teams are doing.

To accomplish that goal, I help highlight the awesome events, activities, resources, and accomplishments of SciAct project teams on the NASA Science website. I also help gather and consolidate information about the various conferences where SciAct and our project teams are represented in order to facilitate enhanced collaboration at these incredible events where our connections and impact can be amplified.

My communications skills are also often applied across various other SciAct media, such as our annual Impact Report, and even as the Social Lead for the DoNASAScience social media channels, where I curate and creatively share various ways for the public to engage in NASA Science activities for all.

What's one piece of advice you would give to someone interested in learning more about science?

For anyone interested in learning more about science, I recommend checking out the wealth of educational resources and materials available on the NASA Science website.

I also recommend exploring ways to get involved in DOING real science through citizen science projects such as the GLOBE Program, which allows anyone interested to start making observations that contribute to real Earth Science research.

Who inspires you?

I am inspired endlessly by our planet. Spending time in nature, experiencing the wonders of Earth and the miraculous ways in which all of us are interconnected in this amazing web of life, I am filled with awe. It's a privilege to support NASA Science missions that help us grow in our knowledge and understanding of Earth and the Universe.

What are some fun facts about yourself?

People are often surprised by all the things I've done…

  • Working in quality control in the seafood industry,

  • Training people in CrossFit and nutrition coaching

  • Zookeeping

  • Volunteering as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)

  • Breeding reptiles in my home

  • Financial advising

  • Energy healing

  • Galloping across the countryside on horseback

  • Traveling the world in support of NASA Earth Science – you get the idea.

I've always been one to take the leap when an opportunity inspires me, and I'm thankful for all the experiences I've had because of that. My latest and favorite adventure is being a mom, which has taught me more about myself and love than anything else in life. I look forward to new and ongoing opportunities for growth and discovery.
