My favorite class in college was geological mapping of structures in the field using topographic maps, aerial images, and sweat. It didn't hurt that my field work was in the beautiful Black Hills of South Dakota!
I was working as the remote sensing director in USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service where saw the tremendous value of NASA satellites and science used for assessing global food supply. This partnership led me to eventually joining NASA to help develop more partnerships with decision makers to leverage NASA's capabilities in water and agriculture.
I develop the strategy and implementation plan to enhance the value of NASA Earth observations and science for water resources and agriculture applications. This includes seeking out partnerships and funding applied research that will result in more active use of NASA capabilities to solve water resource challenges and agriculture/food supply decisions.
In my experience, those with a passion for using science to solve societal challenges and the ability to communicate between scientists and the professionals charged with making decisions are those we seek to be part of our program.
My team, hands down. The scientists that help me run this program and develop solutions for our nation and the world astound me with their expertise and dedication.
Planetary science is a global profession.
