Cassini Significant Event Report

For Week Ending 01/07/00

Spacecraft Status:

The most recent spacecraft telemetry data was acquired from the Goldstone
tracking station on Wednesday, 01/05. The Cassini spacecraft is in an
excellent state of health and is operating normally. Activities on board
the spacecraft include three playbacks of CDA (Cosmic Dust Analyzer) data,
two SSR pointer resets and a clearing of AACS high watermarks. The speed of the spacecraft can be viewed on the "Where is Cassini Now?" web page (http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/operations/present-position.cfm)

Program activities have been light over the last two weeks due to the
Christmas and New Year holidays. During this period, the latest edition of
the Cassini-Huygens Journal began distribution.

Cassini flight operations and ground support equipment transitioned to the
year 2000 without any issues. Cassini will continue to provide NASA Agency
wide Y2K status reports daily (3:00 pm PST) thru 1/7/99, then once per week
(Tuesdays @ 3:00 pm PST) thru March 7, 2000.

Cassini will begin orbiting Saturn on July 1, 2004, and release its piggybacked Huygens probe about six months later for descent through the thick atmosphere of the moon Titan. Cassini-Huygens is a cooperative mission of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency. JPL, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the mission for NASA's Office of Space Science, Washington, D.C.
