Chase helicoptor spots descending Genesis return capsule
One of two chase helicoptors
spots the descending Genesis sample return capsule. |
|
As the Genesis
sample return capsule descends on its rectangular parafoil,
it is tracked by radar. Its position is transmitted to
the pilots of two chase helicopters. The lead helicopter
moves into position above the chute's glide path and slightly
in back. The backup helicopter is at a higher altitude.
The lead helicopter then performs a mid-air capture maneuver.
Tests have shown that helicopter pilots are also able
to spot the chute visually and move into capture position.
