Life
Skills in the Community
Students
need to see the relevancy of career studies well before
they start thinking about careers on their own. The best
way to do this is to help them place these skills in the
context of people in their community and their careers.
Procedure
For each life skill, have students
brainstorm about people they know who use each
of these skills.
Don't stick to high-level
careers. Many of these skills are used by people
on a daily basis, both in their personal lives and
their
careers.
Have students interview a person about how they
use these skills.
This could be someone in their family
or
another community member.
They will need to be
prepared to define for the interview subject the
meaning of
each of the skills.
Remind students to fFind out how the person acquired
these
skills. Was it a result of formal education
or out-of-school experience?
Have students report back to the whole group the next
class period.
Chart the variety of careers that use each
of the skills.
Have students explain how particular skills are learned
in school. For other skills, discuss what out-of-school
experiences are best for helping acquire them.
