S/2010 J1 was discovered on 7 September 2010 by R. Jacobson, M. Brozovic, B. Gladman, and M. Alexandersen using the Palomer 5-m Hale telescope in California.

S/2010 J1 was so designated because it is a satellite (S) that was discovered in 2010, and was the 1st satellite of Jupiter (J) to be found that year.
