Hurricane Charley Hammers Florida
Hurricane Charley makes landfall at 3:45 p.m. (EDT) on Friday, Aug. 13. Maximum sustained winds were near 140 mph with higher gusts. Hurricane force winds extended outward up to 25 miles from the center, and tropical storm force winds extend outward up to 85 miles. The storm cut a swatch across the state.
