Ganymede: Galileo Regio
The surface of Ganymede displays a great variety of terrain types. In this Voyager 2 mosaic, the ancient dark area called Galileo Regio is positioned at the upper right. The bright ray system in the south is probably caused by water-ice thrown outward from the site by a relatively recent impact.
This image uses the same data as PIA00081, with missing data at top and bottom filled in by lower resolution Voyager 2 views obtained simultaneously with the Voyager wide-angle camera, in order to create a complete global view.
