Sputnik on the Pad

The Soviet Union stunned the world with the successful launch of Sputnik 1. The 83-kg (183-pound) spacecraft whipped around the Earth every 98 minutes, transmitting a series of beeps.

"Sputnik" means "companion" in Russian.
