Explorer 1, America's first satellite, sparked pride in a nation that seemed to be losing the space race.

"The Huntsville Times" clearly knew its audience. Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala., played a key role in developing the Jupiter-C rocket that carried Explorer 1 into space.
