Solar Dynamics Observatory:
Goals: The Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) is designed to study the influence of the Sun on the Earth and the inner solar system by studying the solar atmosphere simultaneously in several wavelengths. The orbiting observatory will determine if it is possible to make reliable space weather forecasts. Solar storms can disrupt satellites, power grids and radio communication and harm astronauts in space.

SDO Facts The Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) is the first mission in NASA's Living With a Star program.

SDO will send down about 1.5 terabytes of data per day, equivalent to downloading half a million songs. That would fill a CD every 36 seconds.

The spacecracft images will be more detailed that previous images, almost IMAX movie quality.
