The orbiting observatory is named for James Webb (right), NASA's second administrator. He is best known for leading the Apollo program.
WST is an international collaboration between NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).
The telescope is a successor to Hubble, but will feature technological improvements and also will primary study the universe the infrared. Hubble studies it at optical and ultra-violet wavelengths.
