Goals: This was another Soviet attempt to crash a probe into the Moon. It carried sensors to mission to study interplanetary matter, cosmic radiation, magnetic fields of the Moon and cosmic ray intensity.

Accomplishments: None. A loss of thrust 245 seconds after launch led to a premature engine shutdown and the spacecraft did not have enough momentum to escape Earth's gravity.
