Luna 4 Mission to Earth's Moon

Goals:This was the last of three Soviet spacecraft designed to make a survivable landing on the Moon in 1963. The 100 kilogram (220 pound) egg-shaped lander carried an imaging system and an instrument to measure radiation.

Accomplishments: Although this spacecraft successfully left Earth orbit, a navigation failure sent it hurtling past the Moon at a distance of 8,500 km (5,282 miles) instead of landing on the Moon as planned.

Luna 04 Facts The goal of all three Soviet lunar lander missions in 1963 was primarily to study the Moon's terrain from the surface.

None of the 1963 spacecraft were successful.

The Soviet Luna 9 probe (above) eventually made the first survivable landing on the Moon in 1966.
