Goals: This was the first Soviet attempt to send an orbiter to the Moon using a giant booster intended for the planned piloted mission.

Accomplishments: None. The booster crashed about 50 km from the launch site. The orbiter successfully parachuted to safety 32 to 35 km from the pad.
