Ye-1/1 Mission to Earth's Moon

Goals: This was the Soviet Union's first effort to break out of Earth orbit and explore the Moon. The small probe was intended to study icosmic radiation and magnetic fields in interplanetary space before crashing into the Moon.

Accomplishments: None. Vibrations caused the rocket to disintegrate 93 seconds after launch.

Ye-1/1 Facts The spacecraft carried natrium to create an artificial comet that could be photographed from Earth.

This was the Soviet Union's first attempt to send a probe into interplanetary space.
