7K-L1/5L Mission to Earth's Moon

Goals: This was the second Soviet attempt to fly around the Moon in preparation for sending cosmonauts.

Accomplishments: None. One of the second-stage engines failed to fire during launch, and the launch vehicle was destroyed about two minutes after launch.

The race to send humans to the Moon was commemorated on 1967 Soviet stamps (right).

The spacecraft was a stripped-down version of a Soyuz spacecraft.
