7K-L1/4L Mission to Earth's Moon

Goals: This Soviet spacecraft was designed to fly around the Moon in preparation for sending cosmonauts on lunar missions.

Accomplishments: None. One of the first-stage engines failed to fire during launch, and the launch vehicle was destroyed 97 seconds after launch.

This mission was part of an effort to send Soviet cosmonauts to the Moon.

The race to send humans to the Moon was commemorated on 1967 Soviet stamps (right).

The spacecraft was a stripped-down version of a Soyuz spacecraft.
